Meet John Black
Candidate for Richland School Board At-Large
While John Black may be best known as the former President of the Columbia Council of Neighborhoods, he has a history of working hard to highlight and spotlight organizations and individuals who are doing good in the community..
Whether its coordinating a Sleeping Bad Drive to Benefit the AllKind Foundation to collaborating with the Heyward Career and Technical Center to raise funds to financially support students in the Barbering program to purchase their barbering kits. John has an extensive history of volunteering in Richland One School District.
John has served on the Judges panel for the 2023 Teacher of the Year as well as served at Chair of the Logan Elementary School Improvement Committee (SIC) for two school years. When his son left Logan and started attending Meadowfield for the 2023-2024 school year, John continued his service on the SIC as Vice Chair. Currently, John is a candidate for the SIC at Hand Middle School.
During John’s time at Logan Elementary, he was also selected to serve as the Treasurer for the Logan Elementary Foundation, a position he has held in January of 2023.
In addition to the above, John has also served on the 2023-24 School Calendar committee and recently joined advisory committee for HCTC for the Barber Program.
I am proud to have spearheaded a sleeping bag drive in collaboration with Alex Wright and the AllKind Foundation. We were able to collect over 40 sleeping bags that were distributed to the less fortunate that sleep on the streets of and around Columbia.
Transparency shouldn’t come at a cost!
Resume
Education
While John has attended college, he does not have a college degree. What he does have, and possess, is a common sense approach to doing what is right for the students of Richland One as well as the taxpayers and stakeholders.
John has been in Property Managements since 2014, starting out on his HOA board before becoming the HOA President and later becoming the Community Manager after obtaining his Property Management license.
Currently, John has transitioned to apartment complex management and in his current property, he was able to place 3 new Richland One teachers and saving them collectively almost $5,000 in move in expenses. This is just one small example how John has continually and repeatedly looked out for teachers in Richland One.
Additional Community Experience
On top of everything else John is involved in, he is also currently a City of Columbia appointed representative to the Richland County Transportation Advisory Committee where he has served as Chair since June of 2023.
